Some Factors that Trigger Obesity

Genes and environment are known to be two of the most obvious and prominent reasons of obesity. However, there are other factors as well that are equally responsible for making people obese. One of them is emotions. It has been seen that people indulge in overeating to overcome different emotions like anger, hopelessness, depression and boredom. This, however, does not suggest that obese and overweight people suffer more from emotional upheavals than others. It implies that their eating habits are influenced by their feelings.

There are some people who resort to overeating in order to meet up with social expectations of being physically more presentable and desirable. Here, obesity is used in the form of a defense mechanism that is mostly found in teenage and young girls. Individuals who are more sensitive generally start overeating when hurt by someone or other such instances.

Obesity has a lot to do with age. With age, muscle loss and fat gain happen. The metabolism too becomes slower. As a result, you require lesser amount of calorie consumption per day. In women, the menopause stage brings about a few changes in the body for instance the rate of metabolism decreases significantly in this period. This causes many women to gain weight during this phase.

Obese individuals are usually less active when it comes to sex. Their interest level in sex is either very low or totally nil. This often results in low self-esteem which, in turn, prompts an individual to indulge in overeating and consume more calories. This naturally leads to excessive weight gain. Sex has the capability of burning more than 200 calories. Therefore, people who enjoy a normal sexual life due to their proportionate BMI do not gain excess weight in spite of bingeing once in a while. The extra calorie intake is compensated by a normal or regular sexual activity.

Pregnancy also facilitates weight gain. In most cases, women gain an extra four to six pounds after getting pregnant. There are also certain misconceptions that aggravate the problem of weight gain during pregnancy such as a pregnant woman should eat more during this phase. However, the fact is that one should eat sensibly at the time of pregnancy.
